Google reveals its design principles | Branding | Creative Bloq | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

To ensure a strong brand identity, every organisation needs a design style guide, to ensure that all its visual assets adhere to consistent principles. And that applies just as much to the planet's biggest company, Google, as anyone else.

Since January 2012, under the leadership of team manager Christopher Bettig and design/project lead Roger Oddone, Google has been working on creating a solid, yet flexible set of guidelines for using its visual assets for both its vendors and its own designers. And it's now released the results.

Basic Principles of Flat Design - And Resources to Get You Started!

Basic Principles of Flat Design - And Resources to Get You Started! | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

In case that you have been stuck in a cave for the past few years, let me tell you this nice news: flat design is the current craze. We should now say goodbye to those intricate designs dominated by brushes, gradients, drop shadows and all those kinds of designs. I repeat, flat is the new trend.

The flat design is an emerging design style that uses flat shapes and icons. It basically revolves around the use of rectangles, circles, triangles and others shapes with the absence of other design elements like shadows, strokes and gradients. It was made popular by Microsoft in their computer systems, especially their new operating system they call Windows 8. Basically, the flat design style is rooted on two principles: simplicity and readability. These two principles guide the designers in formulating stylish web layouts, software designs, posters and many more.

Hovhannes 's insight:

flat design is a new web and application design trend.

Bodies in Motion by Leah Yerpe | Inspiration Grid | Design Inspiration

Bodies in Motion by Leah Yerpe | Inspiration Grid | Design Inspiration | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

Leah Yerpe is a talented artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

“I enjoy using the human figure in my work because we cannot help but project on and relate to it. The bodies in my work are multiplied in different poses, twisting, floating and falling on a ground purged of contextualizing marks.

I never pose my models; they have free reign to move in an immediate, improvised dance. This looseness contrasts with a fastidious drawing technique, where I capture the bodies of my models as if formal elements in a collage. I see them transformed from free individuals into symbolic figures. This is akin to the transformation of human experience in mythology and religion.

The influence of mythology on my artwork is often hinted at in the titles, though my work is not a direct illustration of the stories. What I’m after is that kernel at the heart of the story, the core that will always resonate human experience.”

Disney Researchers Create A Way To Make Geared Figures That Look Amazingly Life-Like | TechCrunch | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it
For centuries the creation of geared automata has been sort of a dark art. To design a mechanical device to move like a human or animal was a trick in itself and to build the gears and rods necessary to propel the thing was even trickier.

Web design eye-candy: 24 ultra-colourful user interfaces

Web design eye-candy: 24 ultra-colourful user interfaces | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

Much has been written about the use of colour in web design. Back in the day there were stark warnings. Pick as few as possible, seemed to be the general advice, and be sensible about your choices.

I covered the main points when I wrote about colour and web design five years ago. A lot of that advice still stands up but there has been a definite shift, and nowadays it seems that more and more designers are embracing colour like never before. The polychromatic web is upon us!

The combination of flat design and blocks of saturated colour is certainly a winning combination from where I’m sitting. It's a trend that is perhaps underpinned by the growing number of devices with retina screens in circulation.

A strong, clever use of colour can be great for branded web experiences, web apps of various flavours, and agency websites. That said, I’m not fully convinced that this design trend is ideal for retailers with hundreds or thousands of product pictures, as too much colour can be overpowering, but no doubt there are some good examples out in the wild.

Flat design – the design community just can’t stop talking about it. And feelings are strong. Most designers either can’t get enough of this trend, or absolutely hate it. I am somewhere in the middle.

There are five pretty distinct characteristics. Here’s a look at each, plus an introduction to “almost” flat design.

Beautiful Woodwork by Thibaut Malet

Beautiful Woodwork by Thibaut Malet | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

Thibaut Malet is a freelance designer based in Montpellier, France. The incredible creations that you see below are all made by hand with, if you haven't already guessed it, wood. Thibaut has come up with some incredible ideas for the simplest of things such as lamps, bike shelves and more.

Every time I start a new project, I try to work with one or two materials, first, to highlight the object in his natural aspect and also to think about the recycling options in the future. This is why I avoid the use of industrials screws and nails during the construction, replacing them with wood solutions. This process helps the designs to fit my ecological expectations. Recycling materials are a great source of inspiration and coming from a carpenter family, wood stays my material of choice because of his infinite capacities.

Minimalistic Illustrations Of Subtly Humorous Scenes On The Beach - DesignTAXI.com

Minimalistic Illustrations Of Subtly Humorous Scenes On The Beach - DesignTAXI.com | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it
Arusiak Kanetsyan's insight:

London-based French graphic designer Jean Jullien draws a lot while he’s at the beach.

Thus, he created a series of subtly humorous works that showcases the interesting observations he’s made while spending time on the sandy shores by the sea.

“When you think about it, it’s a pretty odd environment in terms of social boundaries,” he tells Cool Hunting. “Yet everyone is as free as a bird.”

First done on paper with brush, then digitally enhanced to give the images vibrant color—his two-dimensional artworks capture people in various amusing scenarios while taking a breather from city life, in a minimalistic cartoonized style to match the essence of the beach.
