Artist Guy Laramée Carves a Mountainous Landscape from an Encyclopedia Britannica Set | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

In one of his most ambitious book sculptures to date artist Guy Laramée (previously here and here) created an homage to the printed Encyclopedia Britannica by transforming a 24-volume set into a sloping mountainous landscape. Titled Adieu, Laramée says the work was inspired in part by Encyclopedia Britannica’s announcement that after 244 years the would cease printing its iconic multi-volume book sets.

Lindsey Davis's insight:

Turning an outdated reference source into a work of art isn't easy, but French artist Guy Laramee made it happen. The work was inspired by Encyclopedia Britannica announcing that it would no longer print its multi-volume book sets.

Unraveling Animals by Jaume Montserrat | Colossal

Unraveling Animals by Jaume Montserrat | Colossal | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

"I tend to have weird dreams too when sleeping on a plane, but nothing comes close to those of Jaume Montserrat. While on a flight home the Barcelona based illustrator dreamt he was on a Noah’s Ark-like island and “there was only one animal from each specimen. All of them were empty, asexual and immortal. They didn’t need to hunt, nor were they scared of being hunted – so there was a perfect symbiosis.”"

Lindsey Davis's insight:

One weird dream led to an incredible drawing series from Spanish artist Jaume Montserrat.

These unravelling animals are drawn with hollow insides, and are made of ribbons of animal instead of the whole being -- merely the idea of something rather than what it is. If you're looking for inspiration in your work, try tracing an object back to a concept and tie them together visually.

Look at This Lady's Amazing 3-D Printed Selfie | Wired.com | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it
Despite its thoroughly modern origins, it looks like a fragment of a fresco recovered from the ruins of Pompeii.
Lindsey Davis's insight:

The first known selfie was taken in 1914, but this artist took her self portraits to the next level, replicating photographs she took of herself onto distorted pieces of plastic using 3-D printing.

Lorna Barnshaw isn't even recognizable in most of the sculptures, because the printing technique distorted the images. But the properly shaped selfie sculptures are even creepier, because it's so obvious it's only a replication of a real person.

Perhaps one of the most interesting design inspirations came from artist Lorna Barnshaw, who turned her selfies into 3-D printed sculptures that brought some unsettling results.

Incredible Paintings by Adam Lupton

Incredible Paintings by Adam Lupton | Best of Design Art, Inspirational Ideas for Designers and The Rest of Us | Scoop.it

Adam Lupton's broad and wide-ranging interests provides the root of his visually artistic ideation. Having a keen interest in sociology and psychology, he combines his passion for popular culture, typography, philosophy, science/religion, and society to form the basis of his descriptive works. Lupton's gaze revolves around contemporary culture and the nuances that 'modern' life brings.

Lupton's design work balances on the idea of effective communication and purposeful aesthetics, and that from the ground up everything should be started with a solid concept. Lupton's processes lean heavily towards idea generation and conceptualization: things start out through the hand, ideas converge and diverge, and the outcome is more than what it is – it creates an experience for the user, a connection. His diverse background gives him the ability to straddle and draw upon the two slightly neurotic worlds of visual art and design.
