As the world becomes increasingly complex, and our jobs, families, movements, and communities require more of us emotionally, managing the tension between planning and emergence gets both harder and more necessary. When pushed to our limits, it is so tempting to retire to our comfortable corners of this binary–either holding tightly to the illusion of a “perfect,” highly mapped-out plan that answers every question or going with the flow in pursuit of new opportunities as they present themselves. %

Private equity has a significant opportunity to create financial and societal value through sustainability. PE firms that invest in improving the management and quality of companies to enable increased valuation multiples can also bring sustainability to their value creation tool box. Unfortunately, many PE firms do not yet know how to identify, create or capture that value.
Our research into both PE firms (GPs) and institutional investors (LPs) finds that most are focused solely on identifying major red flags during due diligence and collecting a few ESG reporting metrics once an investment is made.

Salesforce recently released a study that reveals a large majority of executives think sustainability is key to their organizations’ success, but only about a third consider their business to have effectively adopted sustainable operations in practice.
The study, conducted in partnership with GlobeScan, surveyed 200 sustainability, finance, and technology professionals, including 76 C-suite executives from the United States, Europe, and Asia. The study identified a major gap between ambition and realistic action — while 93% of these executives highly value sustainability in terms of their business’ success, only 37% find it to be well-integrated into their business.

The conversation around sustainability in the private markets has intensified considerably in the past year. Even as some critics accuse the industry of greenwashing, others express concerns about whether private equity firms are prioritizing sustainability objectives over financial returns.
In hopes of shedding light on the real status of sustainability in the industry—and perhaps reconciling these two opposing points of view—we offer BCG’s first annual “Sustainability in Private Equity” report. Following up on last year’s initial analysis of early data from the ESG Data Convergence Initiative (EDCI), this year’s report offers a considerably more detailed picture of the PE industry’s current performance on social, energy, and sustainability metrics. Deep dives into decarbonization, renewable energy use, and social considerations offer insights into the importance of these key metrics as indicators of business excellence, how performance is changing over time, and how it is connected to financial outcomes.

Private equity firms must accept that ESG has become a strategic imperative, says Petra Funds Group MD Charlie Chipchase. So, what can we expect in 2024? In 2023, private equity firms continued to integrate ESG considerations into their investment processes with Limited partners (LPs) and regulators continued to prioritise the importance of transparency and reporting related to ESG factors.
So, what can General Partners expect as they look to 2024?
1. Move toward outsourcing routine ESG monitoring and reporting 2. The (rising) cost of ESG 3. Increased focus on Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) reporting 4. Continued politicisation of ESG, particularly in the US 5. Rise in ESG litigation and enforcement actions

New research from the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance finds a growing market opportunity for sustainable travel, with more world travelers saying they are influenced by green factors.
The report showed that while price remained the leading factor in travelers’ decisions about where to stay, sustainability is growing in importance — a trend that is likely to accelerate as younger travelers grow more dominant in the market.

The report, which includes a survey of 1,000 business leaders, looks at nine countries, including the United States, China, Britain and Spain, focusing on the energy, technology, infrastructure, transport and logistics sectors.
It defines green skills as "the knowledge, competencies, values and attributes needed to develop and support a sustainable, low-carbon and resource-efficient society", be it via technical skills, such as installing solar panels, or broader practices like corporate sustainability reporting.
While a vast majority of business leaders surveyed see skills as the main driver of the green transition, only 55% of them have put in place, or plan to, programmes for their workers to get these skills.
"This leaves a large fraction of the workforce without crucial skills training, which risks obstructing progress in the green transition," said the report.
Overall, 62% of respondents expect such bottlenecks to delay the transition, and many respondents want governments to pitch in with grants or tax relief for companies investing in green skill programmes, as well as funding for educational courses.

We often think of burnout as an individual problem, solvable with simple-fix techniques like “learning to say no”, more yoga, better breathing, practicing resilience. Yet, evidence is mounting that personal, band-aid solutions are not enough to combat an epic and rapidly evolving workplace phenomenon. In fact, they might be harming, not helping the battle. With “burnout” now officially recognized by the World Health Organization, the responsibility for managing it has shifted away from employees and toward employers. Burnout is preventable. It requires good organizational hygiene, better data, asking more timely and relevant questions, smarter budgeting (more micro-budgeting), and ensuring that wellness offerings are included as part of your well-being strategy
“Transition finance” is shaping up to be one of the new year’s most important subjects for anyone professing to care about the climate crisis.
There’s a “whole world of transition finance being created as we speak,” said Mark Carney, the United Nations special envoy on climate action and finance, during a panel discussion at last month’s COP28 in Dubai.
