Games allow us to explore uncharted worlds, enhance our own creativity and help us understand and solve complex problems in ways we never thought possible. Next-generation gaming experiences should keep these core ideals alive. If all else fails, games should ultimately just be fun, right?

How Video Games Have Become The Perfect Storytelling Medium

How Video Games Have Become The Perfect Storytelling Medium | Machinimania | Scoop.it

Via The Digital Rocking Chair
Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's insight:

This isn't a new concept, of course, but with the big push Sony gave for Until Dawn, it's an example of a growing trend of how developers embrace video games as mediums for telling stories.

The Digital Rocking Chair's curator insight, September 21, 2015 12:30 AM

Robin Burks:  "Throughout the history of video games, some developers have used games as a way to tell a story. Now even AAA titles such as 'Until Dawn' embrace games as storytelling devices."

Porque los Video Juegos se han convertido en el Medio Narrativo Perfecto

Nathan Schultz's curator insight, November 25, 2015 7:55 PM

The recent video game, Until Dawn, offers players the ability to choose the course of the game's narrative by giving the gamer the power to decide each character's actions.  In one scene, two teenagers are tied to a chair, with sharp spinning blades descending on their heads, and the choice of whether one-or both-of the teenagers dies is left entirely to the viewer.

This idea is fascination because it explores the notion that gamers should serve as the "director" deciding the fate of the characters on screen, which ties back in with the concept that modern audiences want stories to be subject to their will.

Believe it or not, the biggest gaming event in the world happened this week. But San Francisco didn't see any more traffic than usual and New York barely saw an extra gamer enter the city -- no, the biggest event in the world was in GamesCom in Germany.

Very interesting Article.

"But there is still resistance from filmmakers. Cage cited directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas who publicly stated it's impossible to tell a story that is controlled by a player. "It's interesting to see that maybe they're not fully aware of what this industry is really doing," he said. "Because actually we are making it, we are creating interactive storytelling."

Emotion and the Self in Games

Emotion and the Self in Games | Machinimania | Scoop.it

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's insight:

The poet, novelist, screenwriter, playwright and games writer will find similar rhetorical devices being applied in different ways.

What sort of emotions am I talking about? In his essay on emotion in film, film theorist Ed Tan speaks about the difference between what he describes as ‘artefact emotion’ and ‘fiction emotion’ (Tan). Artefact emotions are ‘non-empathetic’ and occur in response to sensory pleasures such as the appearance of the actors, costumes, scenery, and special effects.

7 Things Dungeons & Dragons Taught Me About Storytelling

7 Things Dungeons & Dragons Taught Me About Storytelling | Machinimania | Scoop.it

Via The Digital Rocking Chair
Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's insight:

Maybe this is a bit nerdy for many readers, but give it a chance.

There have been disqusions about kids and people who spend times as Gamers and if it would harm them or if it was good for anything at all.

Well folkes, here is a great example of how gaming can be an asset for communication and storytelling.

"Once upon a time (in high school), a classmate bashed on what was then my preferred hobby: Dungeons and Dragons. His main argument was that, while not harmful, playing D&D was ultimately a waste of time. He challenged me to tell him how I benefited in any practical way, and the best response I could make was that enjoyment was an end of its own.

Well, it's a belated addendum, but I want to expand on that now. My years of experience as a Dungeon Master have taught me many valuable lessons, and many of those lessons are specifically applicable to my writing. Here are the seven most significant storytelling lessons I learned from playing Dungeons and Dragons."

Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare'

Lucas and Spielberg on storytelling in games: 'it's not going to be Shakespeare' | Machinimania | Scoop.it

Bryan Bishop:  'Speaking Wednesday at a panel at the University of Southern California — joined by Microsoft’s Don Mattrick — George Lucas and Steven Spielberg argued that introducing the concept of interactivity fundamentally changes the experience. "They’re always going to be different," Lucas said when asked if movies and games were going to become more similar. "They’re never going to be the same."'
