Google announced at Google I/O this month that it’s introducing a number of changes to Google+, which mainly affect the site design as well as usability.
I love good infographics. And as the person who considers which third-party infographics we run, I appreciate a good pitch, one that demonstrates that someone is aware of what our site is about, what’s appropriate for us and doesn’t take a cookie cutter approach. That’s a good pitch. Here’s a bad one that I received yesterday through the Marketing Land contact form: "I came across your blog and I have been following for a little bit now. I have enjoyed your articles and think they are very informative. I would like to pass along an infographic describing the growth of social media marketing and how careers within the field are growing. I know how you get several infographic submissions a week and they amount to a sales pitches, however, this is just not one of those. I think you will be able to use this on your website and have great feedback from your readers....."
I recently attended the New South Digital Marketing Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on behalf of the GinzaMetrics team. Here's some of the advice we picked up. Become a data guru: Only about 20 percent of companies are actually making decisions based on data, and the rest are flying by the seat of their pants. Learn & document: Determine if your efforts are successful and understand why or why not.Become automatic: Once you’ve started testing and learning, you will know what metrics yield results. Master targeting: Targeting can help place the right experience before customers at the right time. Click through to read more!
A big part of what made Facebook reach IPO stage was the arrival of grandparents, aunts, uncles, teachers and yes, parents. Passing the “grandma test,” which pushed Facebook to over a billion users, is probably the key to Tumblr’s future. So, will Grandma use it? I tend to think not. At least not as many as those who joined Facebook, or at least not right away. Why? There are some inherent barriers. The idea of “blogging,” even when it is as simplified and dare I say enjoyable as Tumblr can make it, can still be highly intimidating to people who are less “computer savvy.” With Facebook, you sign up, add your friends, and then see what they are doing. It’s simple. With Tumblr, there is still the impression that you are actually starting a blog, which of course comes with perceived technical hurdles such as setting up a template/design for your “site.” Sometimes those perceived technical hurdles can be as deadly as real ones.
In the wake of Chris Hadfield's amazing social media adventure from space, I consider the significance of the online for the future of interstellar exploration.
As it turns out, social media and search go hand-in-hand...
From Facebook and Twitter, to Pinterest and MySpace (yes, it still exists), social media users are often on the search for… something. For marketers, understanding the searches that lead to improved engagement is critical. To that end, Azntaiji Multimedia and SocialRadius have produced a new infographic highlighting exactly what so many of us are searching for.

It’s been years since community news sharing site Reddit has made a major change to how things appear on its coveted front page of popular submissions, but today the company announced a new feature called multireddits that could do just that. Reddit enables its users to submit links or self-authored posts to a variety of “subreddits” (aka a specific category). The multireddit feature enables you to combine several of those subreddits together, which can then be subscribed to on its own. It’s worth noting that the capability to create a multireddit has been around for a while (manually typing each subreddit’s name in the URL), but now the Reddit team is making it easier to share and browse through them. Previously, if you wanted this kind of functionality, you’d have to create another user account and subscribe to only the subreddits you wanted to collect or create a new folder of content on iOS app AlienBlue. “We’re working on making browsing reddit easier and more diverse,” Reddit developer Max Goodman (aka chromakode) wrote about the new feature. “The first step is giving you deeper control over what makes up your front page.” Read more at http://venturebeat.com/2013/05/14/reddit-multireddits-feature/#xBBEkbkF203DqWzh.99

From Dylan Tweney: Google Glass is one of the most polarizing user-interface inventions to come along in decades. We'll have a chance to see just how polarizing this week when thousands of developers crowd into the Moscone Center in San Francisco for Google I/O, the tech giant's sixth annual developer conference. Since Glass just started shipping to its earliest adopters, Google I/O will probably have the highest concentration of Google Glass wearers anywhere to date. That means we'll have plenty of opportunity to watch people struggle with its interface -- and to watch bystanders' reactions. Expect lots of photos of Glass-wearing nerds to pop up in your usual media streams. On the one hand, Google Glass users look like the Borg, creeping us out as they stare into a digital middle distance that no one else can see. It also raises troubling privacy implications, since it can be used to take photos and video almost surreptitiously. On the other hand, the device is undoubtedly a harbinger of technologies to come that are even more integrated into our bodies. The question now is: How do we make the most of this invention without making ourselves look like complete dorks?
Email has the potential to deliver a strong ROI for marketers, though the precise response rates depend on a number of factors including the subject line, type of offers and the time of day the email is sent. The best way of accurately finding the optimal time of day to send your emails is to run tests, taking into account fluctuations around pay day and annual events such as Christmas and bank holidays. According to the Econsultancy/Adestra Email Marketing Industry Census 2013 only half of businesses (49%) are currently testing the time and day of their email messages, so either the other 51% already know the optimum time or they're working off a hunch. So to give some food for thought on where to start looking and testing, here are six case studies and infographics that look at the best time and day of the week to send emails...

One of the most important things that you can do to drive repeat sales is to create an email list (at least according to this study). One of the huge advantages of email is that most businesses achieve about a 20% open rate on email and a .3% opt-out rate. Compare that to social media and email has a huge advantage, not to mention it is much more likely to be the last touch prior to sale. Email closes if you do it right. This is a great infographic on why email subscribers leave and why they stay. I would add one best practice: consider giving them something. Coupon, discount, widget – little drives people to act than a good incentive or a deal. Let me know your thoughts on this one!
According to Hubspot.com, companies who create, optimize and promote their blogs get 55% more traffic and 70% more leads than those who don’t.

I’ve become a big fan of content curation in the last year or two. It’s one way that site or business owners can build a community around their brands as well as develop a reputation as a “thought leader” on a subject. Many people, however, aren’t familiar with it. When people ask, I tell them, with so much information on the web these days, people want to see content about a topic, but curated by someone whose opinion they respect. Content curation sites allow for this. A large group of these sites has popped into existence in recent years. One way or another, they allow people or businesses to gather all their favorite blog posts, news stories, pictures or videos in one topic and store them in one place on an ongoing basis. I like to use one called Scoop.it for the majority of my content curation. I manage topics on startups, cities, the future and other subjects.
This year will boast some of the largest growths in digital marketing that the world has ever seen. The count of social network users is increasing faster than ever. Everyone seems to lives on their mobile devices and there are 175,000 new blogs created on a daily basis. It’s clear that social media, quality content, and mobile / SMS marketing are a key trio marketers will be focused on in 2013.
It’s about time you give some love to Google+, a social media platform set to attract more people not only because of its new dressed up interface, but also by the recent features added. Google+ is obviously betting big on photos as it launches its ability to “auto awesome” images uploaded to it. Its mobile app came through with its refreshing updates as well. All in all, it has been a very active month for Google+ and the new wave of features is projected to increase its social networking share. Now here’s an infographic ready to turn anyone who’s willing to make the jump an instant Google+ savvy user.

Search engine optimization has not been dependent on a minimal number of factors for a long time now, such as number of times a keyword appeared on a page, and it continues to become a more complex web of on and off-page factors every month. One of the more recent factors that has had an impact on search ranking is social media.

These 10 infographics will teach you many essential elements to begin to know about Responsive Website Design- a major design trend for 2013. Simply put, Responsive Website Design is a way for designers to create one website with a few style sheets, which allows the website to be seen on any device without having to create it from scratch for a tablet, mobile device, desktop device, etc. With Mobile Search increasing rapidly, having a website that works for every device is a necessity and responsive design allows the site to reformat content appropriately.
