The old stereotypical social studies lesson plan of starting the movie and then sitting in the back of the class and drawing up practice plans, well, there's a reason stereotypes exist. However, if used well, a movie can be a powerful educational tool.

cameron kopp's curator insight, November 13, 2013 4:33 PM

This year I had thel pleasure of watching all three of these movies, and realized I could use them in the classroom, and the students would enjoy it and also it would fit a few lessons.  In each film I would talk about bias, because all the movies only show one side of the story.... The American side.. I could also use these to talk about the idea of American heroes.   This article gives great advice on the things that teachers and students should be looking for in each movie.

Public domain fans, pull your noses out of those musty old books on Project Gutenberg, but keep your eyes glued to the screen!

The Library of Congress just cut the ribbon on the National Screening Room, an online trove of cinematic goodies, free for the streaming.
