From 1920 to 1924, Lucille Murphy attended the Milwaukee Normal School, eventually graduating with degree in music. During her time as a student, she filled a small scrapbook with a variety of mementos, ranging from photographs of friends, dance cards, ticket stubs, and pressed flowers.

In 1972, the Ms. Foundation for Women produced Free to Be… You and Me, an illustrated book and record album set. Initiated by Marlo Thomas, the mission of the Free to Be… You and Me project was to provide healthy messages refuting and rejecting gender stereotypes while encouraging the positive and empowering post-1960s ideas of gender equality, individuality, comfort with one’s identity, and tolerance. Using her celebrity clout, Marlo Thomas got a number of her celebrity friends to create, write, and perform the modern day lessons to children in song and story form. No doubt the hope was that the parents and other adults in children’s lives were listening — and learning — too.

Even as women were accepted in certain industries, their attempts to organize for legal rights were consistently mocked in political cartoons, like this anti-suffrage postcard from 1907.

The reason these glasses are so common are that many of them survived for the very same reason of needing to be hidden. Tucked away under the bar, in the booze cabinet, and other places children, in-laws, nosy neighbors, and even spouses were expected not to peer, just saved the life of the glasses. They remained unscathed, hidden in dusty places until the now-adult children discover them as part of the estate. (Of course, the true iconic bachelor, however real or unreal he may be, he may have used the glasses to the point of wearing the decals off them… If we can believe the legends of “the bachelor life”. History is written by the victors, but also by the scrapbookers, the collectors, the keepers, the pack rats. By those who show up, at the beginnings of things and with the right technology. History sometimes comes in pieces. It needs to be reassembled. Pasted and coaxed. Sometimes the finished product still has holes. In one corner of the climate-controlled manuscript division, on a series of otherwise empty shelves, sits Lilli Vincenz’s unprocessed collection. ... Twelve boxes. Cream-colored. Heavy. Inside: meticulous fragments of the gay rights movement of the latter half of the 20th century. Political pamphlets, sociological surveys, photographs and obituaries. Diaries of a young woman who was nervous about going into her first gay bar but whose Arlington living room later became the default place for gay women to feel at home.
